CAC Annual Report 2012

Eastern Westchester Biotic Corridor Report,
prepared by the Metropolitan Conservation Alliance,
Wildlife Conservation Society, Bronx, NY

The Town of Lewisboro's Conservation Advisory Council (CAC) was established in 1970, in accordance with New York State's General Municipal Law, to advise in the development, management and protection of the Town's natural resources. Activities sanctioned by the law included preparing open space and natural resource inventories and maps, advising Planning, Zoning and Town Boards on natural resource issues and publishing informational and educational literature.

The CAC completed an Open Space Inventory of the Town's undeveloped parcels in April 2000. The inventory identified five major greenways across Lewisboro. The three Town of Lewisboro parks, two Westchester County parks and other preserved parcels lie in these greenways as well as unprotected open space parcels totaling over 2000 acres. The CAC hiked and photographed each parcel and then ranked the parcels on their relative significance for preservation based on a matrix of natural resources. The inventory and matrix will help guide the Town to select properties for preservation.

"Walking Wild Lewisboro", a detailed trail guide to the Town's nature preserves and parks is available for $5.00 at the Town House, Parks & Recreation, South Salem Library and the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation Main Office Building.
