The office of the Town Historian is actively seeking information, oral family histories, photos, postcards and artifacts relevant to the history of Lewisboro’s six hamlets.
Holdings include maps, deeds, diaries, daybooks and ephemera dating to the 18th century documenting the lives of early families. Family names include Benedict, Bouton, Gilbert, Hoyt, Keeler and Lawrence. The collection also includes early 20th century photographs and some earlier family photographs.
Information and historic materials relating to the hamlets of Goldens Ridge, Cross River, Lewisboro and Vista are especially sought. Information concerning Henry Agard Wallace, Vice President and Secretary of Agriculture under Franklin Roosevelt, and resident of the town until his death in 1965, and our town’s namesake, John Lewis, is also welcome. John Lewis (born Lower Salem 1793, died Washington, D.C. 1871) was the son of John Lewis of Clinton, CT and Margaret Hayes of Lower Salem.
Questions relating to the town’s history, genealogical and otherwise, are welcome. Limited genealogical records are available. I welcome the opportunity to speak with local organizations, school and scout groups.
I am also interested in local ghost stories from Lewisboro and the surrounding towns to be included in a second book of ghost stories.
