The Town of Lewisboro's Recycling Center is located behind the Town House at 11 Main Street, South Salem.  The Recycling Center is open on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. 

ITEMS FOR RECYCLING CENTER 

PLASTICS:

Only the items which have the recycling triangle on the bottom showing number 1 or 2 in it are accepted.  These are mostly bottles but could be some jars as well.  Not accepted are plastic toys, bottle caps or any other numbered plastics.  Numbers other than 1 & 2 do not melt at the same temperature and are not accepted by the converters.

GLASS:

Clear, brown & green glass.  Place in separate containers, no metal rims or caps please.

METAL:

All metal objects excepting refrigerators, air conditioners and car parts. 

Refrigerators and air conditioners need to be certified that the Freon has been removed before the recycling process. Even a defective appliance that probably has no Freon needs a sticker to insure and certify that there is no Freon remaining in the appliance. Westchester County issues "Freon Stickers" to certified refrigerant extraction technicians who have documented that they own E.P.A. certified freon extraction equipment. The following are several dealers who remove Freon.  A complete list is available at the Town Clerk's Office.

CHRISTMAS TREES:

Lewisboro residents may bring their Christmas trees to the Town's recycling center, behind the Town House at 11 Main Street, South Salem on Saturdays in January between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The trees will be chipped by the Highway Department to be recycled as mulch.

      PROPER DISPOSAL & RECYCLING - other

  • Household paint:  oil-based, water based or latex paint may be legally and safely disposed of in your garbage by hardening the paint by mixing the paint with kitty litter or other absorbent pellet material until no liquid remains. The lid must be off.
  • Motor Oil:  take to service station of retail outlet that sells motor oil.
  • Oil Filters:  Drain oil from the filter,  may be accepted by recycling center, curbside collection, local scrap metal dealers. As last resort wrap drained filter in newspaper and dispose of the the garbage.
  • Vehicle Batteries:  Take vehicle batteries to retailers that sell them.

WESTCHESTER COUNTY TIRE DISCARD:

Westchester County has initiated a program to help residents discard old tires which might become a mosquito breeding ground.

Many nonprofit and charitable organizations welcome donations i.e. Junior League thrift shops or tag sales sponsored by churches and synagogues. Others are:

  • Westchester County through its website www.westchestergov.com link to Department of Environmental Facilities is a clearing house for large household or office items.
  • Westchester Access is open to businesses that want to donate old computers and related equipment to nonprofit organizations.
  • Big Brothers and Big Sisters (914-963-4453) picks us usable donations of large items.
  • The Salvation Army needs sellable, usable items. Information (914-664-0800)
  • Goodwill accepts clothing, toys, books, shoes and small houseware items. Information (718-728-5400)
  • Planned Parenthood of the Hudson-Peconic region runs an annual fund-raiser with donated items. Call the Auction Line at (914-467-7320)
  • The YMCA in White Plains (914-428-1130) accepts donations on behalf of the women who line in the 135 room residence that the agency runs.

  • The Career Closet provides new and gently used appropriate interview attire for men and women who are moving from welfare to work. For information on Saturday mornings call (914-944-1472)

  • Children's Village accepts furniture, computers, lamps office chairs, new clothes, new books and new sporting equipment. Call (914-693-0600 extension 1587)
  • My Sister's Place, a shelter for abused women, welcomes donations of kitchen items, linens, bedding and towels to help client set up homes once they leave the shelter. Call (14-683-1333 extension 150)
  • The Family Resource Center in Peekskill helps homeless families with functional items. (914-739-0411)
  • A-Home, a Mount Kisco based coalition of civic and religious organizations develops low income housing accepts furniture, bed frames, lamps, end tables an bookcases. (Information 914-666-0740)
  • The Piggy Bank, a Scarsdale thrift shop that operates for the benefit of the White Plains Hospital Center accepts seasonally clothing. Store at 4 Grey Rock Road, M-Sat 9:30 to 4 p.m.

TO RECYCLE CELL PHONES and EYEGLASSES:

Residents can recycle eyeglasses at Lewisboro's Recycling Center on Saturdays (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) The eyeglasses will be recycled to persons in need through the Lewisboro Lions Club. Eyeglasses can also be left t the Town Clerk's Office during weekdays.

Certified Cell Phone Acceptance Center

Westchester County March 1, 2006 legislation mandated all cell phones be recycled rather than disposed in the trash. Westchester County Commissioner of Environmental Facilities has designated the Town Clerk's Office as the acceptance center for cell phones.

The Town participates in the County's HopeLine Cell Phone Recycling Program. Recycled cell phones are collected and distributed to people at risk.

You may drop off the cell phones at the Town Clerk's Office Monday - Friday 9 am to 4:30 pm or at the Town's Recycling Center on Saturdays 9 am to 4 pm.

Additionally:

Two independent studies funded by the US Environmental Protection Agency and the State of California respectively, reveal that obsolete or non-working mobile phones qualify as hazardous waste even with their batteries removed. The toxicity is due to the use of the toxic metal lead in the phones and their propensity to leach the lead content when deposited in a municipal landfill.

  1. Cell Phone Recycling with HopeLine:
    Westchester County and Verizon are teaming up to increase the number of old, unwanted cell phones recycled in Westchester County through the HopeLine Program.
    Cell phones contain several materials that should not be disposed of in a solid waste facility. Instead, spent cell phones should be recycled, and with the Verizon's help, a cell phone and related equipment (e.g.chargers) collection box is located in the Town Clerk's Office, 11 Main Street, South Salem
    Cell phones that are reusable will be refurbished and donated with pre-programmed minutes to domestic violence victims. Those that are not will be recycled.
  2. For all donations to the D.A.'s Office, the cell phones need to come with their chargers and be disconnected from any service provider. The phones are programmed and, in turn, go to senior citizens and domestic abuse victims for emergency purposes.

  3. Charitable Recycling is an international company that "is dedicated to keeping today's used cell phones from tomorrow's landfills, where they are toxic to our earth." Their three goals are to help safeguard the environment, provide emergency communication to those in need, and to partnering with charities nationwide to significantly increase and exceed their fundraising expectations.
    You can designate any organization (Schools, Centers, local businesses for example-or even NRDC...) to be collection points. As the sites collect and send the phones (in increments of $50 or more), Charitable Recycling provides marketing kits, promotional posters, collection boxes and prepaid postage for free. The return is $1.00 per phone, and the profits go only to the Designated Organization(s). Phones that cannot be reused/recycled are disposed in compliance with EPA disposal regulations.
    They Partner with with The Wireless Source (www.thewirelesssource.com http://www.thewirelesssource.com>) for disposition of the used cell phones collected.

This popular Lewisboro Lions annual project involves volunteers from throughout the Town who can give a few hours of their time to do some “spring cleaning” of our scenic roadsides.

Neighborhood coordinators are needed. Anyone wishing to organize their neighborhood cleanup and local organizations should let Lion Jake Kommer know as soon as possible. Call 763-8788.
