The Town's Dog Control is responsible for enforcing the Town's Dog Control Law. The law requires that all dogs must be on a physical leash when off the owner's property.
Dogs are prohibited from:
- Running at large
- Engaging in habitual loud howling, barking, crying or other conduct so as to disturb the comfort or repose of anyone other than the owner
- Chase, jump upon or otherwise harass anyone, habitually chase or run alongside or bark at motor vehicles
- Create a nuisance by defecating, urinating or digging on public property or private property other than that of its owner, or
- If a female dog, be off the owner's premises when in heat.
- The Town's Zoning Ordinance restricts the number of dogs and cats per residence to five over four months of age.
Anyone having a complaint about a dog may call (914) 763-3511. If you wish, the Dog Control Officer will speak to the owner of the dog in question and advise them of the problem. If there are further violations, the Dog Control Officer will issue a ticket if she witnessed the violation. Otherwise, the person who witnessed the violation may file an Information and Complaint form with the local Justice Court, and a ticket will be issued pursuant to that Information.
Dogs found wandering at large are subject to seizure. To redeem a seized dog on a first-time impoundment, the owner must pay impoundment ($30) and shelter fees and present a current dog license. It may also be necessary to pay for bordatella vaccinations. For each subsequent impoundment, the fee is $40 for the second offense and $50 for the third offense. The Dog Control Officer may also issue a ticket for running at large. Penalties for violations range from $25 up to $200.
