Lewisboro Library Annual Meeting

This year’s guest speaker is local author Cahal Whelan, who will be discussing “A guide to the Franklin mile markers of the White Plains, NY to Danbury, CT Old Post Road.”

His history-rich booklet details the stone mile markers that trace the old post roads throughout Westchester and neighboring counties, including those found in Cross River, South Salem and Waccabuc.  This artery, originally an Indian trail, became North America's first official mail route in 1673. The stone markers were one of the improvements instituted by Benjamin Franklin when he was a postmaster general for the colonies from 1753 to 1774.

Searching for the remaining markers today can turn a leisurely road trip into an archaeological adventure!  The presentation will be preceded by a short business meeting.
